HISTORY OF BSF

The National Armed Police Battalion of India diligently guarded the nation’s border with Pakistan until 1965. However, a pivotal change unfolded when Pakistan launched unprecedented attacks on Sardar Post, Chhar Bet, and Beria Bet in Kutch, thereby revealing the glaring inadequacy of the NAP in handling armed conflicts. Consequently, in response to these events, a border security agency was promptly established through a United Nations Security Council resolution in December of 1965. Spearheaded by its visionary founding director, Shri KF Rustamji, the agency swiftly and decisively deployed 25 battalions across Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, and the Northeast regions.

BSF presently

Presently, the BSF, comprising an impressive force of 192 battalions (including three from the esteemed National Disaster Response Force), vigilantly and resolutely safeguards India’s international borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. Notably, the BSF not only plays a crucial role in maintaining border security but also actively engages in controlling infiltration operations in the challenging terrain of the Kashmir Valley. Additionally, the force conducts relentless counter-insurgency operations in Odisha and Chhattisgarh states, effectively curbing threats to national security. Furthermore, the BSF diligently carries out thorough and comprehensive inspections along other vulnerable sections of the international borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh, ensuring utmost vigilance and preparedness.

• BSF contributes its personnel every year for UN Missions.
• During the Kargil conflict 1999, the BSF remained on the heights of the mountains and defended the integrity of the country with all the might at its command in unison with the army
• BSF personnel have been performing Internal Security Duty in Manipur for the last 10 years and have been successfully fighting insurgency in those areas.
• During the earthquake in Gujarat on 26th January 2001, the BSF was the first to reach out to help the distressed people.
• The BSF is handling the security issues on the famous Kartarpur Corridor.
• BSF is deployed at various ICP and LCS on Borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
